Long Beach Island Vehicle Beach Access (Off-Season)

Note: This guide covers accessing beaches by vehicle which is only allowed in off-season months. For information about accessing in-season, check out our 2024 Summer beach access guide below.

Long Beach Island’s towns open their arms to welcome visitors to enjoy the picturesque beachfront. Apart from pedestrians, they are also open to four-wheel-drive cars during the off-season months, from late September through early May. With a Beach Buggy pass, you can cruise along the shores and experience wildlife-oriented activities such as observation, photography, nature study, or surf fishing.

To ensure the preservation of the delicate coastal ecosystem and the well-being of beachgoers, permits are mandatory for 4WD vehicles. Securing one requires a valid driver’s license, registration, and insurance. Each town may implement specific rules and regulations, but do not worry—this guide offers insights on where to apply for permits, the associated rates, and the date when access is available.
